The world’s largest search engine, Google, has announced its ‘Year in Search’, a roundup of 2023′s top global queries. Many Korean-related cultures, such as bibimbap, are ranked among the top global searches.

Google announced on Dec.12 that bibimbap was the most searched recipe of the year. Bibimbap is mixed rice with meat and assorted colorful vegetables. It was ahead of Spain’s “espeto(sardines skewered and cooked over a wood fire)” and Indonesia’s “papeda(congee made from sago starch)”.
Korean google users searched a lot of traditional Korean recipes, including garlic pickles, oyster pickles, radish greens, green onion kimchi, and suyuk(boiled pork), though they did not often search bibimbap recipes.
In terms of globally ranked songs, K Pop group Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid” appeared on the overseas list at No. 5. BTS member Jungkook’s “Seven” also came in at No. 10, proving the popularity of BTS. In the domestic K-POP song ranking, (G)I-DLE’s “Queencard” took the top spot, while songs by female idol groups such as New Jeans, IVE, and Le Sserafim dominated the rankings.
The global TV series category also featured a lot of K content. Korean dramas “King the Land” and “The Glory” ranked fifth and sixth in the global series category. “The Glory,” which spawned many parodies in Korea, took the top spot in Korea. “Moving,” featuring Korean style heroes, and “Mask Girl,” distinguished with the actors’ outstanding performances, were ranked second and third, respectively.
“What is,” a new category introduced this year, also garnered attention. ‘Jamboree’, which was somewhat unfamiliar to domestic users, took the top spot. “ETA,” which stands for estimated time of arrival, and “Ditto,” meaning like-minded, were ranked second and the third, respectively, proving the influence of New Jeans.
