“덕은 외롭지 않아 반드시 이웃이 있다(德不孤 必有隣)”

덕불고 필유린’은 흔히 덕필유린(德必有隣)이라고도 한다. 『논어(論語)』 이인편(里仁篇)에 나오는 성어(成語)다. 너그러운 아량으로 훌륭한 일을 하는 사람은 한때 고립되거나 남의 질시를 받아 외로운 처지에 빠지는 순간이 있을 수도 있지만 결국 그 정성에 감동해 반드시 함께하는 사람이 나오게 된다는 것이다. 같은 무리들이 함께 어울리는 유유상종(類類相從)처럼 덕을 갖춘 자에겐 반드시 덕이 있는 사람이 따르게 된다는 이야기다. “청년이 흥해야 국가가 흥한다(靑年興則國家興)” “앞서 누군가가 심은 나무로 인해 후세 사람이 그 나무 그늘 아래서 시원한 바람을 쐴 수 있는 것(前人栽樹 後人乘凉)” 중앙선데이
